Imprisonment and fine for a person who marries a second wife without permission

Lahore: The court sentenced a person who marries a second wife without the permission of the first wife to be imprisoned and fined.

Judge Adnan Liaquat of Family Court Lahore pronounced the decision on Zona Nasr’s request. During the hearing, Barrister Usmanji Rashid Cheema appeared in the court on behalf of the petitioner.

Later, the court issued its verdict, in which the court said that Muhammad Aurangzeb Khan had entered into a second marriage without the permission of his first wife. Written permission is legally required for second marriage.

The court verdict further states that the accused Aurangzeb Khan did not take permission from the first wife before the second marriage. The accused has violated Section Six (5) of the Muslim Family Law Ordinance. The accused is sentenced to 7 months imprisonment for remarrying without permission. If the accused does not pay the fine of 5 lakhs, he should be kept in jail for one more month.
