Rape incidents also increased in Punjab

Lahore: The Sustainable Social Development Organization (SSDO) has released a research report on reported cases of violence, rape, kidnapping and honor killings against women.

In 2023, almost one case of violence was reported daily in Sindh. The number of cases of violence against women has reached 10,201 in the year 2023, which is 16 percent higher than the 8,787 cases reported in 2022. 10 thousand 201 cases of violence against women were reported in Punjab.

The report states that incidents of violence against women have been reported in all districts of Punjab, but Lahore is the most affected district where 1464 cases have been reported. It is followed by Sheikhupura (1198) and Kasur (877).

Similarly, incidents of rape have also increased in the province. A total of 6,624 cases of rape were reported in 2023, a 12 percent increase from the 5,890 cases reported in 2022.

Faisalabad is the most affected district with 728 cases, followed by Lahore (721) and Sargodha (398). In 2023, 626 cases of female abduction were reported in Punjab, including Lahore (136), Faisalabad ( 30) and Wahari (26) are the most affected areas.

120 cases of honor killings were reported, with Rahimyar Khan (9), Jhang (8) and Rajanpur (8) being the most affected areas. 20 cases of human trafficking were reported, of which 19 were from Chiniot. .

According to Executive Director SSDO, incidents of violence against women in Punjab have increased by 16% in 2023. Lahore tops the cases of violence against women, followed by Sheikhupura and Kasur.

Faisalabad tops the list of rape cases, followed by Lahore and Sargodha. The government has been recommended to tighten violence against women laws and establish protection centers for women.

He said that according to the data of the Sindh Police, there has been an alarming increase in the incidents of violence against women in Sindh province during the year 2023.

According to the report, about 26 women were kidnapped every week in 2023. This number is significantly higher than in 2022. In 2023, rape cases were reported with about 4 women per week. These are also more than the figures of 2022. In 2023, an average of 13 women were killed every month in the name of honor. These figures are very alarming and draw attention to this serious problem.
