Living in a green environment can protect against bone pain, research

Beijing: Living in greenery is not only good for the eyes, but it can also reduce the chances of developing weak bones, a study has shown.

A study conducted at China’s Central South University found that people who live in greener areas have higher bone density and lower risks of developing bone disease.

According to a study of 400,000 British citizens, this may be due to less air pollution, which is known to cause inflammation.

Experts said that trees and plants act as natural filters to remove pollutants from the air and reduce the risks to the people living there.

The researchers measured the effects of living in greenery on people using normalized difference vegetation (NDV) with the help of satellite images.

Statistical analysis revealed that people who lived in green environments had stronger bones and were less likely to develop osteoporosis during the observation period.

The study authors estimated the presence of greenery in NDVI from 300 m in diameter to 300 to 1500 m in residential areas.

For every increase in NDVI, researchers observed an increase in bone mineral density and a 5 percent decrease in the likelihood of osteoporosis, according to research published in the British Medical Journal.
