Karachi: The Sindh Wildlife Department has released the annual bird census report for the year 2023-24.
According to the survey data, the number of guest birds coming from the cold places of the world to different water bodies of Sindh was 26 thousand more than last year. Among the visitor birds recorded in Barsund for the first time in this barred history, there were 9 species of birds that were seen many years later.
After completing the “Annual Waterfowl Census” of the year 2023-24, the Sindh Wildlife Department issued its regular report, according to which according to the survey data of the current year i.e. 2024-2023, the number of waterfowl and watercourses across Sindh The total number of birds coming in was 6 lakh 39 thousand 122.
The Sindh Wildlife Department team collected data by conducting surveys in the months of January and February at around 30 locations including Kenjhar Lake, Manchhar Lake, Hamal Lake, Haliji Lake, Run of Kuch, Langh Lake, Naridi Lagoon in Sindh province.
According to Chief Conservator Sindh Wildlife Javed Mehr, according to the survey data, compared to last year, this year, the guest birds made their temporary nests in many new areas in addition to the traditional habitats. 1 lakh 14 thousand 790 birds became guests at the place of run-off near Kuch.
36 thousand 196 birds have settled at Ranpurdam Nangarparkar near the same place, they say that according to the data obtained for the current year, some new guest birds were seen whose arrival evidence was not there before, among these birds are barheaded. Recorded in Barsund for the first time in history, these birds include Cotton Pygmy Goose, Indian Spotted Duck, Oriental Darter, Lesser Flamingo and around 11 other species.
In addition to these, 57 different species of waterfowl were recorded that traditionally come from the colder parts of the world on an annual basis, with the largest number being the Lesser Sling Duck, Great Crested Grebe, Indian Spotted Duck and Cotton Pygmy Goose. According to the survey data, there were 9 species of birds that became part of observation after a long period of time.
The survey was conducted in different districts of Sindh including Badin, Tharparkar, Thatta, Jamshoro, Larkana, Dadu, Karachi, Sukkur, Ghotki and other districts. According to the survey, more than 613,000 birds visited the water bodies of Sindh in the surveyed areas.
