Writing by hand is better for brain function, study finds

Oslo: Although typing on a computer or phone may be faster than writing by hand, experts believe it is less stimulating for the brain.

According to media reports, a study published in the journal Frontiers in Psychology has shown that writing is better for brain function than typing.

Researchers at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) conducted experiments on university students where they recorded the brain activity of typing and handwriting participants. The researchers found that handwriting improves learning and memory.

Audrey VanderMeer, a co-author of the study and a professor of neuropsychology at the university, said, “Our key finding in the study results was that handwriting activates almost the entire brain versus typing, which does not activate the brain at that level.”

The study also found that handwriting creates connections between the visual, sensory and motor areas of the brain, while typing does not activate the brain at this level.
