Stress became the leading cause of drug use among American youth

Washington: A recent study revealed that American youth who are involved in some form of addiction cited stress as the number one reason for using drugs.

According to media reports, the team of American researchers says that this new study highlights the need for better mental health care for young people.

Experts from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDCP) have said that better access to treatment and better mental health care can reduce the tendency of youth to use drugs and the resulting stress.

The team, led by senior researcher Sarah Connolly, reviewed data from 2014 to 2020 on more than 9,500 13- to 18-year-olds, all of whom were using some type of drug.

A variety of drug use was reported by the youth, including alcohol, marijuana, painkillers, valium and xanax.

When the researchers asked the youth why they were using drugs, they said that reducing stress in life was the main reason for using more drugs.
