Nawaz Sharif, three-time prime minister and patriarch of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) is back to Pakistan in 2023 after four years of self-imposed exile due to corruption allegations. His return home was greeted by cheering crowds in his stronghold, Punjab province, revitalizing the PML-N’s base. “It was a historic day,” said PML-N spokesperson Marriyum Aurangzeb. “The people of Pakistan have spoken out and are supporting Nawaz Sharif.” Sharif’s return gives the election campaign enormous strength. Because Nawaz Sharif’s charisma and political acumen remain strong, particularly among older voters who remember his development projects and social welfare initiatives. In contrast to the legal hurdles that cast a shadow over Nawaz Sharif’s election campaign.  However, a pending appeal against his conviction in a corruption case and ongoing investigations into other cases could damage his image and dampen voter enthusiasm.

Khan’s PTI: Fighting the Flood

Cricket legend and politician Imran Khan built his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party on an anti-corruption platform. Despite being ousted from power in 2022, Khan still has a passionate following, particularly among young people. His party, with its strong grassroots network, remains a major force in Pakistani politics. “You have stolen our mandate,” Khan told his supporters at a recent rally. “But we won’t give up. We will fight for fair elections and bring about real change in Pakistan.” “However, Khan’s path to the elections is fraught with obstacles. He faces contempt charges and disqualification proceedings while several PTI leaders are implicated in corruption cases. These legal disputes could hamper the party’s election campaign and demotivate its supporters.

Sharif’s campaign focus on PML-N experience, achievements in economic development and promises of stability. It targets older voters and rural areas where the PML-N always enjoy traditionally strong support. Khan, on the other hand, is expected to capitalize on his anti-establishment rhetoric, his youthful appeal and his promises of social justice and reform.
