Election Commission; Permission to extend the contract of Executive Director IBA by 3 months

Karachi: The Election Commission of Pakistan allowed the Sindh government to extend the tenure of the current Executive Director of IBA Karachi Dr. Akbar Zaidi by 3 months.

The permission to extend the tenure of Dr. Akbar Zaidi has been given on January 5 at the request of caretaker Chief Minister Sindh, which was received by the Election Commission in the form of a letter on December 28.

According to the permit issued by the Election Commission, if the Sindh government issues a letter to extend the tenure of Dr. Akbar Zaidi by 3 months without any further consideration, then in the context of this notification, she came as a director till April 12, 2024. BA will be able to work as his first four-year term ends two days later on January 12.

It should be remembered that earlier the caretaker government of Sindh had recommended one more tenure covering four years in the tenure of the Executive Director of IBA Dr. Akbar Zaidi and Chief Minister Sindh Justice R. Maqbool Baqir approved this summary on November 13. The summary was sent to the Election Commission for final approval, however, the Election Commission rejected the summary and the chances of extension of the Executive Director of IBA in the next term were lost.

It is noteworthy that Chief Minister Sindh Justice R. Maqbool Baqir is so keen to extend the tenure of the Executive Director of IBA in the future that after the Election Commission did not give permission for the four-year period for the first time, the Commission A second letter has been sought for permission to extend the contract for just 3 months.

According to an officer of the Sindh government, perhaps the main objection to the commission is that a government which has been in power for only 3 or 4 months should appoint a vice chancellor/director for the next 4 years without any selection process. How to appoint

On the other hand, it is also believed that the commission has received some requests from the faculty and staff of IBA on the status of the institution, while these requests were not considered by the caretaker Chief Minister of Sindh, probably. These petitions also have their effect in this whole matter.

“Express” also contacted Sindh Chief Minister Rashid Chana’s spokesperson to know the position of the Sindh government in this regard, but as usual he kept avoiding the conversation.

It may be recalled that the single bench comprising Justice Mahmood A. Khan of the Sindh High Court suspended till January 30 the execution of the previous order of the Election Commission of Pakistan of December 5 rejecting the extension of the four-year term of the Executive Director of IBA. It has been done and notices have been issued to the parties for January 30.

In this regard, one of the petitioners, Nadeem Hussain, had taken a stand in his petition that during the correspondence regarding the appointment of Syed Akbar Zaidi in the IBA, the Chief Minister of Sindh had assured that his services would be confirmed. Restrictions of the Election Commission in this regard will not be effective. It should be noted that the petitioner is the husband of a former senator of the People’s Party.
