Pets improve mental capacity of lonely elderly, study

Guangzhou: A recent study found that elderly people who live alone with their pets have better cognitive abilities than other elderly people who live alone.

A study published in JAMA Open Network highlights the improved mental capacity of older adults who own pets and live alone.

The study was conducted by Dr. Yanzi Li and colleagues at Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou, China. The study looked at the relationship between 7,945 elderly participants with an average age of 66 and pets.

The results revealed improvements in participants’ mental ability due to owning a pet. Older adults showed improvements in speech, fluency, and memory.
