The last sightings of the Oriental Darter were in 1994
Karachi: After 29 years, a rare bird, the Oriental Darter, has arrived at Lingh Lake, a water body in rural Sindh. The last sighting of the Oriental Darter was in 1994.
These birds with spear-like beaks are excellent swimmers and divers. While swimming in the water, their long curved neck looks like a snake. That’s why the fairy bird is also known as snake bird in the world.
These birds prefer local migration and do not travel long distances. The diet of this bird includes small fishes, frogs, small water snakes and other insects.
Conservator Sindh Wildlife Javed Mehr says that it is a welcome sight to see a Yantel Darter sitting on a tree in the water bodies of Sindh.
Javed Maher said that these birds are scientifically called indicator species. Last year, an oriental darter was captured from the personal custody of an individual near the delta in the lower part of Sindh. .
Javed Maher said that in the past, oriental darters were found abundantly throughout the Indus, but the lack of fresh water in rivers and lakes during the last 3 decades is the main reason for their rarity, due to the recent flood water and the accumulation of water in lakes and rivers. Addressing the favorable environment.
