Massachusetts: A recent study found that older adults who took chocolate supplements had better cognitive performance.
According to media reports, the above clinical trial divided a group of elderly adults into two groups, one with a lower quality diet. Both groups used chocolate supplements for two years.
The results of better cognitive ability were found in those who had a poor diet compared to other participants. Participants whose diet quality was good from the start showed no change in their cognitive ability.
Dr. Shirag Vyas, from the Department of Psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, USA, said that the results show that chocolate supplements can improve cognitive function in elderly people who do not have a good diet.
Researchers from Birmingham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School also participated in the study, which was published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. The study included 573 elderly men and women who were instructed to take chocolate supplements daily for two years.
After 2 years, when the researchers examined data from the entire group, those taking daily chocolate supplements saw relatively better changes in overall cognitive ability and executive function.
